The term Graphic Collaboration refers to the idea of working together with a skilled artist to create original work, using technical printmaking resources. The artist has their own concept and style of work, but often their understanding of the technical aspects of printmaking can be limited. The printer is technically skilled and can specialise in any particular field of printmaking: for example, lithography; both are experts in their fields and are united in a joint project that allows these two halves to bring a wealth of expression in artistic printing. The collaboration allows the artist to focus on the image while the printer who makes the work possible.
This is an intense and active work of two components: the artist and printer, and in turn involves five basic steps to overcome difficulties: human factors and technical factors such as anxiety, frustration, perseverance, and that the artist has to find an avenue into his/her work in the medium of printmaking.
Clinical diagnosis and prior work by the artist (drawings, sketches)
Planning of technique, size, colour, editing (the work may be a book, a portfolio, etc)
The work of the artist defines the role of the printmaker
The process of printing/reviewing difficulties and successes/preliminary tests until the artist and printmaker are happy and agree to make the edition
This is ultimately the manifestation of two wills applied to a conceptual and technical project, to think about everything from the first sketch through testing, to the finished work.
